CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary school went on lockdown due to an active police scene near the campus on Friday afternoon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials told NBC Charlotte that Mountain Island Elementary School, located in the 7900 block of Pleasant Grove Road in northwest Charlotte, went on lockdown in the noon hour on Friday.

School officials say the lockdown was prompted by police activity in the area, and assured parents there is no police activity at the school.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to the scene of an assault nearby in the 8200 block of Old Plank Road.

No further information was immediately made available.
