ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. -- Muddy footprints led Alexander County deputies to two men accused of robbing a local church.

The pastor of Promise Land Ministries located off of B & S Lane told the sheriff’s office someone smashed a church window to break into the building. Police say the burglar took the Sunday offering money and fled.

Officers noticed footprints in the mud outside of the church, which led to a nearby house. Deputies say they found Corey Gage Hill, 18, inside the home with fresh mud on his pants and shoes. Investigators were able to match the footprints in the mud to the bottom of Hill’s shoes.

Hill confessed to the crime, according to the police department.

Officers also arrested a second, 17-year-old suspect.

Police recovered most of the stolen money.
