HONOLULU (AP) -- A North Carolina man has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly scamming the University of Hawaii out of $200,000 to organize a Stevie Wonder concert that never happened.
Federal prosecutors and FBI investigators announced charges Thursday in Honolulu against 44-year-old Marc Hubbard. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
A grand jury has also returned an indictment against 44-year-old Sean Barriero of Miami. Barriero is accused of transporting the money as part of the deal.
The show was to raise funds for the athletic department. The school paid $200,000 as a deposit, but learned after starting to sell tickets that neither Wonder nor his representatives authorized the show.
State lawmakers determined the fiasco cost the university about $1.1 million total, including payments to three law firms.
