COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say an on-duty Columbia police officer was drunk when he crashed his patrol car while driving to an emergency call.

Police Chief Randy Scott says 55-year-old Harold Caldwell is charged with driving under the influence and should be fired next week.

Scott said Caldwell was answering a call about family members fighting at an apartment complex around 9 a.m. Friday when he hit a sign and a fence as he turned into the parking lot.

The chief says city employees are required to take drug and alcohol tests when they cause a wreck, and the results showed Caldwell was under the influence. His blood-alcohol level was not released.

Caldwell remained in the Richland County jail Friday evening. It wasn't clear if he had a lawyer.
