BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Police on the campus of Gardner Webb University are investigating a sexual assault that occurred Tuesday night around 9 o'clock.
Officers say the victim, a recent graduate, was walking in the Lake Hollifield Complex area when she was attacked and raped by a lone assailant.
"While we don't have a description to know if he's black or white, we do know he was a male, she said he had a beard and a southern accent," said Paul Foster with GWU Media Relations.
Foster said the suspect overpowered the victim and was not armed with a weapon.
"Obviously fear was my initial reaction. As far was walking around, I'll definitely be more observant, try not to walk alone, I actually had been walking back alone about an hour before it happened," said Sarah Cominskie a senior.
School officials e-mailed a campus alert last night after the attack happened.
"It's hard to imagine because I walk about at night all the time very comfortable, and now this happened, it's alarming," said freshman Jenna Ford.
Campus officials are urging students to take precautions by not going it alone at night.
"The buddy system in other words, have somebody walk across campus with you building building," said Foster
He says that campus police are looking for information on the case and ask that if any students see someone acting suspicious to give them a call.
