LINCOLNTON , N.C. -- A man called police himself after suspects fled with money he gave them to buy drugs, according to the Lincolnton Police Department.

Officers responded to the Walmart parking lot for a report of an armed robbery on Monday evening.

Timothy Froneberger told police he was waiting to meet a friend for dinner when a vehicle pulled up next to his. He allegedly told police they demanded his wallet at gunpoint, and then left the scene.

Police began to question the report after realizing Froneburger waited an hour to report the incident. Investigators say he then changed the story.

Foneburger is now charged with falsely reporting a robbery with a dangerous weapon. Police say he admitted to giving the people $20 for marijuana. He reported the robbery after they never returned with his cash or drugs.

He was given a $1,000 unsecured bond.
