CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A driver accused of leading a chase through Charlotte escaped from police custody, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers began pursuing the driver of a Mercedes Benz around 12:40 a.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of I-85 near Beatties Ford Road. They say they clocked the car going 92 mph in a 60 mph zone.
The driver, 28-year-old Joanquil Thompson, allegedly refused to stop for emergency sirens and a chase began.
The pursuit lasted six minutes. It ended when troopers used a PIT remover to stop Thompson at Remount Road and Wilkinson Boulevard.
Police say Thompson then tried to flee on foot. Troopers used a taser on the man and took him into custody.
Thompson escaped while undergoing treatment at a local hospital and remains at large.
Troopers are working to secure warrants for felony speeding to elude, speeding in a 60 mph zone, reckless driving and DWI.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
