GASTON COUNTY -- A couple in their 60s are dead after what Gaston County Police say was a murder-suicide.

The bodies of Terri and Clyde Benfield, both in their 60s, were found dead from gunshot wounds in their home on Michelle Lane, northwest of Belmont.

Investigators say the couple's 5-year old grandson was in the house but was not hurt.

At around 5:30 Wednesday morning, police say Clyde Benfield called his son and daughter-in-law.

The son was working but he spoke to his daughter in law, who in turn, finally reached her husband.

He was getting off work and called 911.

"I just got a call from my wife and my dad has just killed my mother," he says on the 911 tape of the conversation.

The son, who has not been identified, tells the 911 operator that his father has 40 to 50 guns in the house.

"My mom and dad are having problems, but I would never think he would kill her," he tells 911.

Gaston Police Sergeant Myron Shelor said the daughter in law, who lived five minutes away, went to the house and was met at the front door by Clyde Benfield.

"They did talk briefly and then just with the situation, they got the 5-year old out of the house and met officers as they were responding," Shelor said.

When officers did enter the house they found Terri and Clyde both dead from gunshot wounds.

"I was shocked," said next door neighbor, Amy Biggerstaff.

She said Terri Benfield never said anything about domestic problems and just seemed like a happy, doting grandmother.

"She enjoyed being with her grandchildren, and she came over here because we have a swimming pool in the backyard and she would bring the kids over to go swimming,"

Gaston County Police said they had no record of ever having been called to the house for any domestic related issues.
