CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A heavily traveled shortcut that's used to get to Milton Road from Lanecrest Drive was the scene of a brutal crime last Friday.
A 23-year-old woman was ambushed and nearly raped around 6 o'clock that evening.
"It's scary because it's right at my back door," said Angela Moore, who lives in apartments that connect to the shortcut.
The police report says the suspect "physically overpowered her and began to disrobe her," but investigators tell us that somehow she managed to fight off the man.
"It was just the grace of God. God was with her. Who’s to say the next time it happens it's going turn out the same," said Moore.
Police say that so far there are no additional witnesses. They are convinced this was a stranger type case, and that it was a crime of opportunity.
Officers are urging women who live in the area to exercise caution and walk with a partner if they are going to use a shortcut.
"All this stuff back here, plus I don't know who be in the bushes, so I just go where I can see," said a woman who didn't want to be identified.
Police only have a vague description of the suspect. They say he's a black man in his 20s wearing short dreads, about 5'9" and weighing 160 pounds.
Officers are seeking the public's help. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
