YORK, S.C. (AP) -- A Rock Hill man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for the death of his girlfriend's 2-month-old granddaughter last year.
The Herald of Rock Hill reported 58-year-old Roger Bryson pleaded guilty to assault and battery in York on Monday.
Prosecutors say Bryson suffocated Jaylin Chavis while sleeping with her on a loveseat.
Circuit Judge Michael Nettles also ordered Bryson to spend a year on probation after he completes his prison term.
Bryson originally was charged with illegal neglect of a child.
The girl had been placed with her grandmother by the Department of Social Services because the infant had tested positive for drugs when she was born.
