LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- Two women in Lincoln County have been arrested on suspicion of stealing mail from mailboxes throughout the eastern part of the county.

Monday night, Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle call on Old Plank Road near Business Highway 16 around 9. The caller told 911 that a red Honda was stopping at mailboxes along the road.

When officers spotted the vehicle on Old Plank Road near June Dellinger Road, authorities say the car was parked on the wrong side of the road, next to a mailbox, with its emergency flashers on.

The suspects told deputies they were familiarizing themselves with a new paper route.

The driver gave deputies consent to search the vehicle, and officials say the driver confessed to stealing mail, as they were looking for money and gift cards because they couldn't afford to buy Christmas gifts for their children.

That's when deputies say they found a trash bag on the passenger side of the vehicle filled with mail from approximately 50 mailboxes that included addresses on Basin Lane, Burgin Trail, Cabin Lane, Mt. Zion Church Road, Old Plank Road, Fountain Lane, Highway 16, Lowes Lane, South Ingleside Farm Road, Little Egypt Road and Dayton Lane.

Lyndsay Lee Thacker, 27, and 26-year-old Kasey Danielle Turner, both of Lincolnton, were arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor larceny.

Both were booked in under a $10,000 bond each.

The Sheriff's Office says the incidents have been reported to the U.S. Postal Service, and say additional charges are possible.
