CLEVELAND, N.C. -- The sister of a slain Cleveland, N.C., man said her brother and cousin were “in the wrong place at the wrong time” when they were fatally shot as they left a home on Saturday night.

“They were leaving unarmed with my brother (and) another in the back (of a pick-up truck),” Kayla Redman said in an email. “My brother shielded the younger boy (and) took a bullet.”

Redman is the sister of Daniel Carlton Redman, 21, of 628 Cedar Glen Circle, who was found dead Saturday about 3.5 miles away from where the shooting began at a nearby house.

Her cousin, William Thomas Redman, 20, of 112 School St., was also found dead.

Authorities have not identified a suspect in the case.

Sheriff’s officers were dispatched to 1025 Mountain Road in Cleveland at about 10:10 p.m. Saturday in response to a disturbance there.

The caller told dispatchers several men were at the residence with guns. The caller also advised that shots had been fired, and that an orange and black, Harley Davidson special edition Ford F-350 pickup truck was leaving and traveling towards Carson Road.

About 10:25 p.m., Rowan County dispatchers received a call from 520 Hildebrand Road in western Rowan County. The caller reported that two gunshot victims were there, located in an orange and black pickup truck.

Deputies arrived at the Hildebrand Road home and found the two victims dead.

Capt. John Sifford, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said the department won’t likely decide what charges to file in this case until at least Monday.

“Our brother was a kind (and) loving person who would do anything he could to help you,” Kayla Redman said.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call 1st. Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
