SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A Spartanburg man has been arrested and charged in a hit-and-run death of a man last week.
The Highway Patrol has charged 44-year-old Gary Jeter Sr. with hit-and-run involving death and driving with a suspended license.
The Highway Patrol says 31-year-old Shannon Octavous Cross of Spartanburg died after he was struck while lying on U.S. Highway 29 early Saturday. Troopers don't know why Cross was lying in the road near the Interstate 26 overpass when he was hit.
Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says Cross was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center about 2 hours after he was struck.
Patrol Sgt. Bryan McDougald said Jeter turned himself in to Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies Saturday night.
It was not clear if Jeter has an attorney.
