STATESVILLE, N.C. -- A Taylorsville man was booked in to the Iredell County Jail Monday afternoon on suspicion of breaking and entering and copper theft.
Around 1:30 Monday, Statesville Police responded to the 1900 block of West Front Street looking for a reported trespasser.
When officers arrived, they found that a vehicle had driven onto the property and had parked behind the building. While officers continued to check out the building, a motor was heard starting up. Police say that was Ricky Wiles attempting to start a forklift inside.
Wiles fled when confronted by the officers, police say.
Police continued searching the building for the suspect, and came across bolt cutters, a hand saw and freshly-cut copper pipes in a trash can.
Wiles was found hiding behind some bushes and was taken into custody.
Police say other evidence of copper theft was found inside Wiles' vehicle, too.
Wiles is charged with breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools and injury to real property. He was booked in to the Iredell County Detention Center under a $50,000 bond.
