STATESVILLE, N.C. -- Two people have been charged for a rash of drink machine break-ins across Statesville.
Police say the incidents began several months ago. Investigators identified a possible suspect and vehicle believed to be involved in the crimes early on but say they finally received a break in the case this week.
Taylorsville Police said a suspect broke into a drink machine at a Walmart on Thursday morning. The surveillance photo matched the man already suspected of the crimes in Statesville, 27-year-old Wesly Ray Welborn. The Taylorsville Police Department then obtained warrants for Welborn.
He was found Thursday night driving up to a home in Statesville and was arrested on the Taylorsville charges. Welborn was also implicated on the Statesville crimes following an interview. Police say he’s also behind the thefts of newspaper boxes taken from Forest Heights Shopping Center and the Food Lion on Wilkesboro Highway.
Welsboro has been charged for an outstanding warrant, as well.
His girlfriend, 26-year-old Shana Willis, has been charged with possession of burglary tools and driving while license revoked. Police say she drove the suspect vehicle and assisted Welborn with the crimes.
In total, each suspect faces 54 criminal charges.
