MATTHEWS, N.C. – The victim of a deadly Matthews shooting has been identified.
Witnesses say 23-year-old Christian Brett Gaddis was trying to break up a fight outside of his home in the 4700 block of Forestmont Drive when he was shot around 8:30 p.m. Friday.
A neighbor tells NBC Charlotte heard gunshots followed by screams for help. She ran to the scene and tried to put pressure on his wounds.
“We were praying as we were waiting on the paramedics to get there. And the young man said, ‘God forgive me. Forgive me Lord.’ And I think he knew. I don’t know, but I think he knew that he needed God’s help and he was actually praying with us,” Angel Tucker said.
Medics transported Gaddis to the hospital but he died en route.
Friends and family left a makeshift memorial outside of his house Saturday.
“He was a great guy. He was an amazing guy. Did everything for everybody. He was just an amazing guy,” Suzanne Bentz, the victim’s friend, said.
One person was arrested in connection to the shooting but charges have not been filed.
