COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a suspect is dead and a sheriff's deputy has been hospitalized after a manhunt and shooting in a Columbia neighborhood.

Richland County Sheriff's Capt. Chris Cowan says deputies were investigating a woman's report that she was attacked by a man at a drug store on Tuesday afternoon when 24-year-old Adam Jurgen started shooting at them.

Cowan says deputies chased Jurgen to an apartment complex, and he came out shooting.

Cowan says officers fired back, killing Jurgen. Deputy Sheila Aull was hit in the chest during the gunfire, but Cowan says she was wearing a bulletproof vest. Cowen says she was shaken up, but not seriously injured and went to a hospital to be checked out.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
