WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate University was briefly placed on lockdown Friday night after 'suspicious individuals' were seen on campus, according to university officials.

Just after 7:30 p.m. a student witnessed an altercation between two individuals from her residence hall window.  The student reported that one of the individuals may have pointed a handgun at the other.

Campus authorities then sent out an alert to students that suspicious individuals were sighted near Cannon Residence Hall and encouraged students to seek shelter until further notice.

Shortly after 8:45 p.m. another text was sent to students stating that the lockdown had been lifted after a police sweep determined there was no threat.
