KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- The Rowan County Sheriff's Office made an arrest in the murder of a 62-year-old woman.

Authorities have charged 61-year-old Marlene Postell Johnson in connection to the murder of Shirley Goodnight Pierce.

Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Evandale Road to investigate a suspicious death.

Within minutes of their arrival on the scene, officials determined Pierce was murdered. The victim's family said her boyfriend found her body in one of the bathrooms inside her home.

Pierce's brother, Tony Goodnight, told NBC Charlotte his sister had been stabbed, but deputies would not confirm the manner of the death as of Tuesday night.

Johnson was arrested shortly after midnight and is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.

She is expected to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
