CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- A 26-year-old Burke County woman is jailed in Catawba County on Wednesday morning after allegedly leading law enforcement officers on a two-county chase.
She is accused of running over the foot of a police officer and dragging another officer in an effort to get away.
The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office says Angela Dale, 26, of Morganton, was taken into custody in a neighborhood in Long View, southwest of Hickory. She was captured after 3 a.m. Wednesday, several hours after police began pursuing her.
The series of events began in Claremont, according to deputies.
Police in that town pulled over a green Mercedes on suspicion that the vehicle had stolen license tags. Police say the driver took off but was stopped a short time later on Cobb Road.
The driver, identified by deputies as 30-year-old Jason Shook of Conover, was taken into custody.
But police said that while they were at the scene, the passenger in the Mercedes suddenly slid into the driver’s seat and began to pull off. As she pulled away, she ran over the foot of a Claremont officer, according to police.
Another officer was dragged several feet until he could pull his arm out of the driver side window, authorities say.
With police in pursuit, the driver of the Mercedes took off. Police say the pursuit nearly resulted in a crash on Bunker Hill Road, but they say the driver escaped into Iredell County.
About an hour later, Catawba County sheriff’s deputies were called about a hit-and-run collision near Long View. They spotted the vehicle, a Mercedes, and began pursuit again.
After chasing the car through a neighborhood, deputies say the driver finally stopped at Word of Life Church on 19th Street S.W. and ran into the woods.
Deputies called in the K-9 dog search units and looked for the woman, finally finding her.
Catawba County officials say Dale was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a public officer; two counts of resisting an officer; two counts of giving fictitious information to an officer; possession of stolen goods; fleeing to elude arrest; injury to personal property; and several other traffic violations.
She was being held Wednesday under $42,000 bond in the Catawba County Jail.
Dale has a previous record of fleeing to elude arrest. She is on probation after being charged in April with fleeing to elude arrest and drug possession in Catawba County, according to state prison records.
