NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a 76-year-old woman shopping at a North Charleston mall has been stuck and killed by a SUV after she left a store.
Investigators say Margarete Althausen was hit around 11 a.m. Tuesday in a crosswalk at Northwoods Mall.
Authorities have charged the driver of the SUV, 32-year-old Raymond Clement, with reckless homicide. Police say mechanics looked at the vehicle's brakes and said they were badly in need of repair.
Clement had his bond set at $100,000 Wednesday. During the bond hearing, his family told the judge he was shaken up by the death and stayed at the scene of the wreck, comforting the victim until paramedics arrived.
