Man accused of assaulting officer, shoplifting at Northlake Mall

Police in north Charlotte say a suspect is on the loose after an officer was attacked by alleged shoplifters Thursday night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police in north Charlotte say one person is in custody after a pair of shoplifters assaulted a loss prevention officer at Northlake Mall before leading authorities on a foot chase into some nearby woods.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a report of an armed subject at the mall around 7 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived on the scene, they were informed that a person assaulted multiple people while shoplifting from at least one store.

Investigators say that there were two people inside Macy’s that were confronted by loss prevention officers and that when one of the suspects was detained, a struggle ensued. Detectives say the second suspect assaulted the officer to free his friend and that the suspect who was originally detained ran from the store and was not captured.

The second suspect, identified as 18-year-old Darvon Fletcher, was located in the woods near the mall and arrested. He was charged with three counts of simple assault, common law robbery, and second-degree trespassing.

Morgan Taylor was out grabbing dinner at Red Robin with her family.

"Thankfully we're okay," Taylor said. "A manhunt on foot."

She watched the scene unfold right before her eyes. It was something she'd never seen before.

"Around the woods and just along the interstate it looked like he was hovering in a very small vicinity," said Taylor.
