Boy, 12, robbed at gunpoint at playground

A 12-year-old says he was robbed at gunpoint at his neighborhood playground.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It was a scary situation for a local 12-year-old who police say was playing on a playground when he was robbed at gunpoint.

Police are continuing their search for the person who did it, and neighbors in the area concerned for their safety.

It's a normal, innocent-looking playground on Sonoma Valley Drive, but Friday night, police say a 12-year-old boy was robbed there at gunpoint.

"I'm not completely surprised," said a neighbor, who didn't want to be identified. "In the two-and-a-half years I've lived here, I've noticed there are just things that happen that raise a little bit of concern."

People living in the neighborhood are too on edge to show their faces on camera. This man says he warns his girlfriend about how dangerous it can be when she visits.

"I wouldn't recommend her walking around this neighborhood at night," he said.

The police report says the boy had his iPhone and shoes stolen, before running across the neighborhood back to his house. That's when his mom called 911.

NBC Charlotte spoke to her and she says her son is still shaken by the incident, and neither of them is ready to speak about it on camera.

"There are a lot of kids that play in this neighborhood I know that," said the neighbor.

The playground isn't tucked away; it's on one of the main stretches of road through the neighborhood. As police continue their search for the person responsible, for some, this incident is the last straw.

"I'm supposed to re-sign a lease here at this house in the next couple months," said the  neighbor. "And I will not be doing that."

The boy's mother says there was also a friend with him when the robbery took place, but the friend was able to run away.
