CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirm they are investigating a case involving high school students that could involve the exploitation of a minor.
Police say their investigation involves a number of current and former students from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. An NBC Charlotte sources confirms the students under investigation are from Butler High School in Matthews, and that the investigation involves several members of the Butler football team.
The alleged victim is 15-years-old, and the incident is said to have occurred off campus. In a statement, CMPD said "due to the age of the victim and the sensitive nature of this case, her (the victim's) name and identity will not be released."
Police say the investigation also involves alleged larceny and damage to property.
Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit are working with CMS officials on this case.
