Catawba Co. teacher arrested for sex offense with student

A Catawba County teacher was arrested after being accused of sexually assaulting a student.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- Investigators with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office arrested and charged a local teacher with crimes relating to sexual offenses with a student.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, Jeb Stuart Bass was arrested Monday around 6 p.m.

Bass has been charged with one count of statutory rape and one count of sexual offense with a student. He is scheduled to have his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Catawba County Schools say Bass was originally contracted part time at Fred T. Foard High School. In January of 2015, Bass was hired full time as a social studies teacher and remained in that position until May 15, 2017.

In addition to teaching social studies, Bass served as an assistant boys' basketball coach and assistant football coach.

The superintendent of Catawba County Schools, Dr. Matthew Stover, allegedly suspended Bass with pay pending on the outcome of the investigation.

Officials say this is an ongoing investigation and they are working closely with the Catawba County School administrative team.
