Cleveland Co. parents indicted for murder in infant's death

A Cleveland County couple was indicted on murder charges in the death of a 7-month-old baby.

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. – A Cleveland County couple was indicted for murder on Monday less than two weeks after the death of their six-month-old daughter.

Steven Dean and Morgan Conn were already in jail, charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injuries after their daughter, Khloe Dean, was hospitalized back in March with serious injuries.

She died at Levine Children's Hospital in late-April.

A search warrant filed by investigators revealed Conn had previously been investigated by Social Services workers as far back as 2001.

The warrant didn't say which county investigated Conn.

Social Services had previously investigated Conn for allegations of domestic violence, prescription drug abuse, and marijuana use.

In one instance, social services workers alleged that while her son was being treated for brain cancer, she was taking his narcotic pain medication and selling it.

Other reports claimed Conn would sell or trade food stamps for Xanax pills.

Detectives believed Conn was abusing drugs around the time Khloe Dean sustained her injuries.

Deputies also said that when Khloe was taken to the hospital, doctors found her injuries were not consistent with her father's story.

The warrant said doctors noted Khloe had injuries consistent with prior abusive head trauma.

Dean and Conn remain in the Cleveland County Jail.
