CMPD cracks 20-year-old cold case

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A victim of a sexual assault reported the incident to police after it happened in 1994, and now, detectives believe the crime in solved.

Officers arrested Kirk Deanglo Evans, 50, early Tuesday morning in the 900 block of Grass Hollow Road.

The victim was walking along Beatties Ford Road on Feb. 15, 1994, when a man forced her into a vehicle. Police say the suspect drove the woman to a location on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road, where he sexually assaulted and robbed her.

They conducted an investigation but were unable to identify a suspect.

The case was re-examined late last year. DNA found at the scene matched that of Evans, according to police. Warrants were issued immediately.

Evans is now charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and robbery.

The CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit has reviewed 2,200 cases since it began in 2008. Of those cases, 145 have been cleared, and 58 of those were cleared by arrest.
