CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detectives say they are "aggressively" investigating a robbery and sexual assault that was reported early Wednesday morning.
According to the police report, around 2:40 Wednesday morning, a woman was in her apartment on Regal Estate Lane when a person broke into her home, and threatened her with a gun.
The police report says the suspect sexually assaulted the 40-year-old woman, and then stole several of her belongings, including her laptop, her designer purse and some cash.
The report also lists that a bedroom door was broken during the attack.
At this point in the investigation, authorities believe the woman did not know her attacker. If that turns out to be the case, it would be the second sexual assault or attempted sexual assault by a stranger in Charlotte in the past two weeks.
Police have not made an arrest in either attack. They do not have any clues that would suggest the two incidents are connected, however, police point out, this kind of attack is extremely rare.
"Strangers, absolutely unknown to each other, that's very rare," CMPD Lieutenant Melanie Peacock says. "National statistics tend to mirror what we see locally. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 85-90% of cases, the victim and the perpetrator know each other in some form or fashion."
There is a Crime Stoppers reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
