CMPD: Man killed after walking into path of SUV

CMPD said a pedestrian was killed after stepping into the path of an oncoming vehicle in west Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police in west Charlotte are investigating after a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle Thursday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a crash in the 2800 block of Old Steele Creek Road near the intersection of Elmin Street around 10 p.m. When officers reached the scene, they saw a man lying in the roadway. The victim, identified as Joe Lee Stinson, was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

CMPD investigators said Stinson was walking along Old Steele Creek Road when he stepped off the curb directly into the path of an oncoming 2008 Jeep Patriot. The driver of the Jeep stopped and attempted to help Stinson, police said.

Investigators don’t suspect alcohol or excessive speed to be factors in the collision. Stinson was not walking in a marked crosswalk, police said. Investigators told NBC Charlotte they don't expect charges to be filed against the driver.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
