CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- CMPD is investigating a rash of car break-ins at two SouthPark apartment buildings Tuesday morning.

Twenty-two vehicles were broken into at the Cielo Apartments and 5515 Park next door. Several cars had their windows smashed and thieves stole cash and other valuables.

"All the doors were locked," said Alexander Esposito.

He says he parked his Toyota Tacoma in the gated parking deck, but believes theives managed to slide his back window open and stole his wallet and cash.

"First I live in a gated community, on the top floor of a parking deck and I wondered how this could happen at all," he said. "The gate goes all the way to the ceiling of the parking deck, so there's no way to scale the fence you would have had to have a key card or run in after a car or follow somebody in or know somebody on the inside."

Cielo's management tells NBC Charlotte they are working with police to ensure the safety of residents. CMPD has taken measures to curb car break-ins. Signs are posted around the city telling drivers to "Hide your things, lock your car and take your keys."

Many cases involved unlocked cars. However, in this case, many of these vehicles were secured. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to contact CMPD.
