Drunk man assaults sheriff, deputy with scooter: Warrants

A Mills River man faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly assaulting Madison County's top two law enforcement officers with a scooter.

McKinley Luther Aikens, 55, is charged with misdemeanor breaking and entering and driving while impaired in addition to the felony assault charges against Sheriff Buddy Harwood and Chief Deputy Coy Phillips, according to warrants filed Friday at the Madison County Courthouse. The incident occurred between Thursday night and Friday morning near Paint Rock Road and U.S. 25/70, the warrants state.

Aikens remains in custody at the Madison County Jail on a $76,500 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for June 27.
