Elderly man assaulted during home invasion

An 81-year-old man was the victim of a home invasion, suffering serious injuries.

STATESVILLE, N.C. – An 81-year-old man was the victim of a nightmarish attack while he was sleeping.

NBC Charlotte spoke to him about being brutally beaten by two armed robbers this week.

It’s the latest in a string of violent crimes in Statesville, which includes the unsolved murder of an 80-year-old man.

The 81-year-old victim of the armed robbery is a well-known property owner in the area. He says the two armed suspects were yelling out his name as they were beating him senseless.

Rick Maine showed NBC Charlotte his bedroom which was battered and beaten, much like his body.  He has stitches on his leg and staples on his head.

“It feels like somebody hit me with a baseball bat,” says Maine.

The 81-year-old victim says the two armed men pried open the back door. Then moments later he woke up to a living nightmare around 1 a.m. Tuesday.

“I was sound asleep,” says Maine. “One guy threw me down on the floor, put me on my stomach, and put his knee in my back and took his gun and stuck it in the back of my neck, and said to the guy, ‘Well, we might as well kill him now, we can’t find anything else.'”

Maine says the men continued to hit him with guns and kick him.

It comes just about a week after police say a 62-year-old man was attacked in an armed robbery at his Statesville home. Earlier this year, 80-year-old Hugh Moose was shot and killed at his home.

“I thought I’d be dead,” says Maine.

Maine says it’s the fifth break-in at his home in two years.

“They called me ‘Rick’, these two guys used my name,” says Maine.

The suspects stole several items, including two TV sets. They also took his sense of security.

“I’ll never spend another night in this house, ever,” says Maine.

He now plans to move elsewhere with family.

So far, no arrests have been made in any of the cases.
