Gaston Co. cemetery 'maliciously' vandalized

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- Gaston County Police are searching for the vandals who 'maliciously' damaged more than a dozen headstones over the weekend.

Sometime overnight Friday, police say 13 headstones were damaged at the cemetery in the 2900 block of Dallas Stanley Highway, near the intersection of Hickory Grove Road.

Among the 13 damaged headstones, police say, is an historic headstone that marks the grave of a man who was reportedly the last slave born in Gaston County.

The cemetery belongs to Springfield Baptist Church and the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

If you have any information on the cemetery vandalism, you're asked to call Gaston County Police at (704) 866-3320 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 861-8000.
