Goins' wife takes stand in sexual assault trial

Wrestling coach's wife takes stand in trial

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- The defense tried to unravel the state's case against former East Gaston Wrestling Coach Scott Goins and called his wife Angela to the stand Thursday.

The former coach faces several child sex charges after former wrestlers came forward to authorities.

"It spoke volumes to me that he was back coaching again," said Ed Bedard, a parent of former wrestlers.

Bedard told the jury he asked one of the accusers about what he heard involving the accuser and Coach Goins; the accuser was helping coach Bedard's sons at the time in 2011, and Bedard testified the accuser blew off the rumors when pressed about what happened.

"He said no," said Bedard.

No, you don't have anything to worry about?" questioned Defense Attorney Brent Ratchford.

"Well I would take, if I were to finish the sentence for him, he just said no," said Bedard.

The defense later called two of Bedard's son's. Both said they never saw anything inappropriate happen while out of town on trips.

The defense closed the day by calling Goins' wife Angela. She said nothing about the allegations, but did say Goins was like a father figure to many of the wrestlers.

Court resumes Friday.
