ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- The Rowan County Sheriff's office released new pictures that they hope will help them solve a death investigation of a local grandmother.
Sheila Godfrey was found dead in her home on Lyerly Pond Road Friday.
Thursday night, her 1986 Chevy S10 Blazer was spotted at a local laundromat. Detectives say the man driving it got out, threw something away, and then took off on foot, leaving the SUV behind.
The same man was reportedly spotted 20 miles away at a couple of convenience stores on the Kannapolis-Concord line over the weekend. The sheriff's office released the pictures Tuesday hoping someone will be able to identify him.
Detectives have stopped short of calling the man a suspect in the case, instead, they say he could be a key witness.
The sheriff's office has not yet said how Godfrey died. They are awaiting the results of an autopsy but did say her death is suspicious.
Neighbors say Godfrey was a widow who leaves behind a daughter and two young grandchildren.
