CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a man they say accidentally shot himself after robbing a University City convenience store early Tuesday.
According to CMPD, the suspect, identified as Lavarius Mattess Patterson, 18, entered the Kangaroo Express at the intersection of North Tryon Street and East Mallard Creek Church Road just after 2 a.m. Police say Patterson robbed the store at gunpoint before running away.
Officers were told that Patterson was seen running from the business toward East Mallard Creek Church Road. A witness told police that a gunshot was heard in the direction the suspect ran and that he was spotted limping away from the area.
Personnel with CMC-Mercy notified police a couple of hours later when a man arrived at the ER with a gunshot wound to the leg. The description of the man matched that of the suspect, and Patterson was identified by police at the hospital.
Investigators determined that Patterson accidentally shot himself in the leg while running from the Kangaroo Express.
Patterson was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was taken into police custody when he was released from the hospital, police say.
