Man charged after accidentally shooting, killing girlfriend, police say

STATESVILLE, N.C. – A Statesville man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after police say he accidentally shot his girlfriend in the head and killed her Monday night.

According to Statesville Police, officers responded to a call for a shooting in the 100 block of Treeline Drive around 9:45 p.m.

Investigators say that Jason Rashon Tenor, 21, who was the victim’s boyfriend, called 911 and said he accidentally shot his girlfriend. When officers arrived to the home with paramedics, they found the victim, identified as Cortney Smith, on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound. Attempts to revive Smith were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

Two people inside the home told investigators that just before the shot was heard, the couple was heard laughing. Police say the witnesses told them that when the shot was fired, Tenor left the room and told them he accidentally shot Smith and called 911.

Police say that Tenor told police that he was handling a gun that was left at the home by another person. He admitted that he was handling the gun recklessly, but thought it was unloaded because the magazine was removed. He also told officers that he had marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the home.

Tenor was charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was given a $15,000 bond. Police say he has prior marijuana-related offenses and was on probation.
