Man dies from deputy-involved shooting in Hickory

The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation into a deputy-involved shooting in Catawba County.

CATAWBA, N.C. -- Catawba County Sheriff's officials have confirmed that a man was killed Monday afternoon in a deputy-involved shooting on 15 Street NE in Hickory. 

The Hickory record reports that deputies with the narcotics division were investigating a person who lived on 15 Street. The Catawba County Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the Hickory Police Department to respond to the scene, following the reported officer-involved shooting. HPD Officers responded and assisted in securing the scene. No Hickory Police Officers were present at the time of the incident. 

At some point, the situation escalated and the subject was shot by investigators.

A Deputy investigator was involved in the shooting. The suspect was transported to Frye Medical Center in Hickory in critical condition where he later passed away due to his injuries.

The State Bureau of Investigation is now taking over the investigation.

The subject's name has not been released yet.

This is an active and ongoing investigation, The Catawba County Sheriff's Office and the SBI will provide information as the investigation continues.
