Man seen dangling from car charged after standoff

DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. -- Rakeem Leverette had his first appearance in a Davidson County courtroom Wednesday afternoon.

Man clinging to car on I-77 identified after NC standoff

The 22-year-old man was captured on a cell phone camera riding on the back window of a car traveling on I-77 last month.

Tuesday afternoon he surrendered after a five hour long standoff with Thomasville Police.

The SWAT unit was called out to a home on Reid Street after a woman called officers and said she had been assaulted.

"They did a flash bang, when they did that it scared me to death and I just wanted out of my house," said Deana Putnam, a neighbor who watched from across the street.

Putnam has seen the video of Leverette on the car and she was worried that he would not give up.

"After four hours he was not coming out but what got him to come out they said on the loudspeaker that his mom and grandmother were here I believe that his mom was the one who talked him out," she said.

Leverette is wanted for numerous domestic violence related charges connected with the incident in Charlotte.

But at this point it's up in the air when he will be heading back to Mecklenburg County.

In Davidson County he's been charged with assault on a female, assault by strangulation and resisting arrest.
