Man charged in Charlotte's 38th homicide of the year

Detectives with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a man in connection with the city's 38th homicide of the year.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Detectives in north Charlotte are investigating the city's 38th homicide of the year after they say a man was shot and killed early Monday. 

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3500 block of Spring Terrace Lane a little before 1 a.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man, identified as 24-year-old William Weddington, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Weddington was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by medical staff.

Investigators say a person of interest, identified as Maurice Grant, 63, was taken to the hospital as a precaution and will be taken to CMPD headquarters to be interviewed. Following the interview, Grant was arrested and charged with murder, police said. 

Investigators say that Grant and Weddington knew each other and that the shooting was not random.
