Monroe shooting under investigation

MONROE, N.C. – Police in Monroe are investigating after a man was found shot inside a home Wednesday afternoon.

According to Monroe Police, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 2200 block of Wheaton Way around noon. When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as Jason Daniel Cope, 36, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Cope was taken to the hospital and released after treatment, police said. 

Investigators say the woman who lives at the residence, identified as Samantha Marie Byers, 32, was home and at this time it appears she fired the shot. Police have not determined the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have not said if the shooter and victim knew each other.

Police say a 3-year-old child was in the home during the shooting and was not injured. No charges have been filed at this point.
