Driver charged in crash that killed pedestrian

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a man in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian in west Charlotte Friday morning. 

According to CMPD, Donivan Jarrett Winters, 25, was charged with felony death by vehicle, felony hit and run, and DWI after police said he hit a pedestrian on Brookshire Boulevard near I-85. 

Investigators said officers responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck on Brookshire near I-85 around 3 a.m. Friday. When they arrived on the scene, police found the victim lying in the roadway, where they were pronounced dead by Medic. 

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Nefertiti Carial Foust.

Detectives said that Winters fled the scene in a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck. That vehicle was located a short while later and Winters was identified as the suspect. After being interviewed by detectives, Winters was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
