Police: Charlotte teens beat middle schooler for Air Jordans

Student robbed at middle school for shoes

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two high school students are charged with beating and robbing a middle school student of his Air Jordans outside of a basketball game last week.

Daigon Spurgeon, 17, and Conley Monroe, 16, are facing robbery with a deadly weapon and felony conspiracy charges. Police said the two Rocky River High School students lured a 14-year-old student out of the Northridge Middle School basketball game by telling him there were girls outside who wanted to see him.

Once the middle school student was out near the woods, reports indicate the two high schoolers began beating him and took his Air Jordan sneakers, gold chain and $40 in cash. The 14 year old also told police one of the teens had what appeared to be a pistol.

According to reports, the student found and told a School Resource Officer immediately about the crime. The officer contacted the SRO at Rocky River High.

"I'd like to say there is a formula it. But if kids are going to purchase and wear those shoes around town, they just gotta be careful and mindful, and pay attention to what's around them," Chief Randy Hagler with the CMS Police Department said.

According to search warrants, police searched Spurgeon's home and found the shoes and chain, along with heroin, marijuana and nearly half a dozen weapons.
