Police: Man carjacks woman at gunpoint, leads officer on chase

A man is in police custody after police say he stole a car from a woman at gunpoint Wednesday morning and led police on chase.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A man is in police custody after police say he stole a car from a woman at gunpoint Wednesday morning and led police on chase.

The victim called police shortly before 9 a.m. to report a man stole her car at gunpoint from the 2200 block of Catherine Simmons Avenue in north Charlotte.

About an hour later an officer spotted the stolen vehicle near Statesville Avenue.  Officers attempted to stop the car, but the driver refused to pull over.  Officers chased the car, which sideswiped a vehicle and eventually crashed near the intersection of N. Tryon Street and W. 29th Street. The suspect jumped from the car and ran.  Officers caught the suspect along N. Pine Street.

The suspect received minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.  His name and charges are forthcoming, according to police.

No one else was injured in the incident.
