Sheriff: Man, 71, fired shot at deputies

SALISBURY, N.C. -- An elderly man fired a shot in the direction of deputies in Rowan County Thursday morning, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Around 10:30, deputies were called to a home in the 6900 block of Beatty Ford Road after receiving a call that a 71-year-old man was "acting out of his head".

Deputies, along with EMS and family members, attempted to calm the man, identified as Robert Dean Ashby, and convince him to exit the residence.

Relatives then told deputies that Ashby had multiple firearms in the house and was armed with a handgun. Two deputies moved from their position by a door just as a shot rang out, striking the door.

Ashby was eventually taken into custody without further incident and transported to the hospital for treatment.

Once Ashby is released from the hospital, he will be charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official and resisting a public officer.
