CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A suspect was arrested Thursday morning after crashing into several cars, including a daycare van with children on board, while leading police on a car chase.
The chase initially began when a DMV inspector was traveling along I-77 and another vehicle passed him at a high rate of speed, authorities said. The DMV inspector attempted to do a traffic stop. When the car failed to pull over, a chase ensued.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and Highway Patrol officials said they were searching for the driver that had struck the vehicles along 485. Among the vehicles struck was a daycare van that had seven children on board. The van was hit when the driver drifted left of the center, officials said. No injuries were reported.
Shortly after the collision with the daycare van, police said the suspect jumped and ran into the area of Highland Creek, causing Ridge Middle School to be put on lockdown.
According to authorities, a perimeter was set up and the suspect was identified by witnesses. He was then taken into custody and the lockdown was lifted.
The suspect's identity is expected to be released later Thursday.
