Police in Shelby say a suspect was shot and killed during an attempt to serve a warrant early Monday.

SHELBY, N.C. – Police in Shelby are investigating after a suspect was shot and killed following a shootout with police early Monday.

Shelby Police said that officers were attempting to serve a warrant in the 1300 block of Dekalb Street around midnight when the suspect fled from the home. Police say the suspect opened fire on police during the brief chase. According to investigators, officers fatally wounded the suspect after returning fire.

Due to the ongoing investigation, authorities have not identified the officers involved or the suspect, but investigators did say that the officers involved were not injured in the shootout.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave during the investigation. Detectives say this is standard procedure.

Last September, Shelby officer Tim Brackeen was shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant. Brackeen's accused killer, Irving Fenner, was later arrested in Maryland.
