Teacher accused of assaulting disabled child

A Gaston County teacher is accused of assaulting a disabled student.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- An elementary school teacher is facing charges after police say she assaulted a disabled child. 

Cramerton Police arrested 42-year-old Penny Pope Barker and charged her with two counts each of assault on a child under 12 years of age and assault on a handicapped person. 

Police say Barker, an Exceptional Children teacher at McAdenville Elementary School, committed the crimes between October of last year and the beginning of February. 

She was held in the Gaston County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
