Teen arrested after standoff in north Charlotte

CMPD took one person into custody after a standoff in north Charlotte Thursday evening.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a man in north Charlotte after investigators said he stole a vehicle and barricaded himself inside a home Thursday evening. 

According to CMPD, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of I-85 and Freedom Drive around 5:30 p.m. The vehicle refused to stop, but the officer was able to determine the driver’s identity and did not initiate a chase. 

The suspect, identified as Kievon Ratchford, 17, is currently under court-ordered electronic monitoring. Police said Ratchford jumped and run from the vehicle at the intersection of Augusta Street and Dr. Webber Avenue before running into a vacant home. Police surrounded the home and took Ratchford into custody. 

Police said Ratchford was driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a recent armed robbery. He was charged with possessing a stolen vehicle and multiple driving violations. Police said the armed robbery occurred on Beatties Ford Road on December 2.
