CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A quick trip to the Cotswold Harris Teeter turned into a shopping nightmare for one Charlotte woman.
The woman says she was getting some popsicles for her sister, who was suffering from a sore throat, when all of a sudden it happened.
“I’m still shocked at how quickly it happened and how smoothly,” said the victim, who wished to remain anonymous. “This lady came right in front of me and said, ‘oh, can I get something out of there real quick?’ I thought that was rude.”
But she says that woman was guilty of more than just having bad manners. Her wallet was stolen, and with it, hundreds of dollars. The victim says the most shocking detail is the culprits behind the crime.
“You don’t expect women to do that sort of thing,” she said. “You’re always looking out for men.”
On the Next Door app, another person claimed crooks used similar tactics at the Morrocroft Harris Teeter on Sharon Road. And this time, the alleged thieves snatched an entire purse.
“A lot of people work in teams,” said Jonathon Frisk with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. “They work in twos to distract people and the other person will come in and commit the crime.”
Officer Frisk says this sort of crime wave goes up and down, but there are simple ways to protect yourself.
“Stay aware, stay alert. Keep your eyes on your cart or on your buggy,” Frisk explained. “If you do have to put your car keys or purse in that buggy, don’t take your eyes off of it just like you wouldn’t take your eyes off your children.”
